I wholeheartedly support this change in Wales and hope that it spreads to the rest of the UK quickly.
I have long thought that an opt-out rather than an opt-in system is a good idea. The reason most people seem to give who are not registered as organ doners is just not getting around to it.
A change such as this means those who are opposed, for religious or other reasons, still have the choice to opt-out, but all those who have no issue with organ donation will be automatically added to the register.
Just think of all the lives that could be saved as a result!
A landmark change in the law on organ donation in Wales means all adults will automatically become donors unless they have chosen to opt out before they die. The revolutionary new system, which came into effect on Tuesday, is a dramatic departure from the current "opt-in" process and will be closely watched by health officials in the rest of the UK. Some religious groups have criticised the move, but health officials argue that it will save hundreds of lives. The Welsh Government predicts the new law could increase the number of organ donors by as much as a quarter.
